Progress and Assessment at LJFS
At Leeds Jewish Free School, assessment is an integral part of teaching and learning and is designed to help every student achieve their full potential. We believe that effective assessment should not be limited to formal testing, but should be a continuous process that informs teaching, identifies strengths, addresses misconceptions, and supports student progress. This reflects the Department for Education's view that "effective assessment is critical to teaching because it provides teachers with information about pupils' understanding and needs."
Students take part in two whole-school assessment weeks each academic year, providing a clear and consistent opportunity to measure progress across subjects. These formal assessment points are complemented by ongoing classroom assessment every day, including questioning, classwork, homework, quizzes, and teacher feedback. This allows staff to build a detailed picture of each student's attainment and progress over time and to tailor teaching to meet individual needs.
Our assessment information is carefully tracked by subject leaders, pastoral teams, and senior leaders to ensure that every student is appropriately supported and challenged. This robust tracking enables us to celebrate success, identify emerging barriers to learning, and provide timely interventions where needed. Through this approach, we aim to ensure that all students make strong progress from their individual starting points.
We place great importance on working in partnership with parents and carers. Progress information is shared regularly through assessment reports, parents' evenings, and direct communication with staff. These opportunities allow families to understand how their child is performing academically, recognise areas of strength, and work collaboratively with the school to support further development.
Our approach aligns closely with Ofsted's expectation that pupils should "know more, remember more and can do more" as they move through the curriculum. By combining high-quality teaching, regular assessment, careful tracking, and strong home-school communication, we ensure that every student at Leeds Jewish Free School is supported to achieve excellence and develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed for future success
